Guatopo

A stream running through the Agua Blanca area in Guatopo National Park

Guatopo is a national park located 60 miles south of Caracas. Its proximity to home makes it an excellent alternative to a(nother) weekend on the beach. The park is primarily lush rainforest and the elevations vary from a few hundred feet in the valleys to almost 5000 feet at the highest peaks. There are several picnic and camp spots along the road leading through the park, but unfortunately hiking trails are limited. One of the nicest features of Guatopo is that both times I have been there it has been virtually deserted, another welcome change from the beaches.
