July/August 1999-

After a late night of clubbing Rob and I took Tom to the airport for his vacation in Belgium. The two of us then proceeded on to the beach. Our destination for the weekend was Todasana. I had been to the same beach once before not long after arriving in Venezuela. However this time I was driving my Jetta instead of a Blazer. The dirt road to Todasana was rough and rutted in many places. Even though we were only fourteen kilometers away from my apartment (thank you GPS) it took us three hours to arrive at the beach. This is due to the poor roads and having to go around the Avila mountain.

We got to the beach late in the afternoon, as most people were leaving. The elections for the national assembly were coming the next day so few people were staying for the night. Rob had borrowed Tomi's surfboard and tried some afternoon surfing but the waves were just shore break so we stuck to body surfing. By sunset there was only one other group of people left on the beach. Rob and I had a tasty dinner of cheese sandwiches and iced tea before setting up camp. We kept an eye on a large brush fire that had started behind us but it burnt out quickly. That night Rob slept on the surf bag and I slept in my tent under a rock below the road. It was a strange feeling to be all alone on the beach with jeeps rolling by above. At one point some drunk stumbled by singing songs, the whole time oblivious to our presence.

The sunrise was spectacular and we got some decent morning surf. We just played paddle tennis and ate empanadas at a small stand on the beach as people started arriving. The woman at the stand told us they would have fresh fish at noon so we hung around until then before taking off. After an eyeful of girls and a stomach full of fish the two of us headed back on the rough road to Caracas to clean up and start another week of work.

(Note: This beach is no longer accessible following the rains and mudslides Venezuela experienced in December)
